Stop Putting Things On Hold

Career Goals & Planning, Work Life Balance TrackBack URL

Below is an extract of an email I sent this week to a friend who works in a sales role within the City of London. She had talked about her plans for the next couple of years which involved working less, starting a family, moving into a new family home whilst pursuing some passions and hobbies away from work.

But the current market conditions are now directly impacting on her earnings potential and so she feels frustrated that all these goals will have to go on hold and be delayed.

My response to this was:-

“Markets go up and markets come down, money comes, money goes – but ‘time’ unfortunately you cannot claw back.

So focus on doing the things that will accelerate you towards the stuff that’s really important to you – putting systems and people in place to help you work less / build more flexibly, starting a family, starting the new hobbies away from work etc”

The work and cash is just the fuel that provides you with the time to help you achieve these things”

In a downturn, businesses are forced to examine why they do what they do as well as re-looking at the way they operate.

At the same time individuals within those businesses should also be examining why they do what they do – and whether  their vocation is truly allowing them to do the things that are important to them.

Every major shift I have made in my career and lifestyle has been during a tough market – the market conditions and the pressures that come with it forced me to re-look at what it was that was important to me, identify new ways of reaching my desired outcomes – and then take action.

What are you putting on hold….?
