How To Rise Above The Negativity

Job Searching, Mindset, Redundancy No Comments

There is a constant barrage of negativity everywhere you turn these days. Negative news stories, negative forecasts and dire Armageddon-type predictions regarding the economies of  Europe and the western world.

Whilst many of the concerns related to the economic times may be valid – overdosing on such negativity does you no good whatsoever.

You see, when you’re constantly focused on “how bad things are” – it creates fear, paralysis and inaction.

But in a tough market you should be doing the complete opposite.

To cope with challenging times you need to be more proactive, more courageous, and more creative. Something you can’t do if you’re anxious and fearful because of all the ‘bad news.’

Here are some quick suggestions for overcoming negativity and helping you ride out the economic turbulence:

1. Don’t stress about stuff you can’t control:

Just Say YES

Job Searching, Mindset, Networking No Comments

Yes I will join you for drinks. Thank you for the invitation

Yes I will accept your kind offer to help me find work. I appreciate you thinking of me

Yes I will come to the networking event with you, thank you

Yes I will use you as a sounding board for the new business. Glad to have your support

Yes I will come along to the show tomorrow evening.  I could do with a night out

Whenever you pursue a worthwhile goal or dream, there is usually a helping hand just around the corner.  The universe, rather than trying to trip you up, is usually trying to help you. Even if it does trip you up, it’s only trying to teach you a lesson which you need to learn.

[Day 2 of 10] Writing Challenge: A Sports Day! Oh and 5,000 words too…

Mindset No Comments

This is part of a daily series of posts related to my 10 day writing challenge.

These posts are partly a way for me to share my progress (and hold myself accountable to seeing through the challenge) and partly to inspire anyone who wants to get something important done. I’ve already heard from people who are joining me over these 10 days to remove distractions, become more focused and getting important things done.

Yesterday was a challenging day for writing.

[Day 1 of 10] Writing Challenge: 4,000 Words in Solitary Confinement

Mindset No Comments

If you read my blog post last yesterday, you’ll know that I began a 10 day writing challenge in order to create a series of new products and e-learning solutions which we’ll be launching in the coming weeks.

I’ve set myself some aggressive daily writing deadlines.  And to help the process I have removed a number of distractions.

Specifically we have:

- Disabled access to all social media accounts. As of last night all the passwords have been changed by my technology team so I cannot log into Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn for 10 days (even if I wanted to!)
- Removed all social media apps from from my iPhone
- Stopped watching TV or reading papers for 10 days
- Removed all news apps from my iPhone
- Reduced my email checking to 3 times a day

How Did The First Day Go?

Job Searchers: Celebrate The Small Wins

Job Searching, Mindset, Redundancy No Comments

• Updating your CV/resume after days of procrastination

• Setting up or updating your LinkedIn profile

• Making a call you’ve been putting off

• Applying for a new job online

• Having a coffee with an ex-colleague or ex-client

• Finally securing a face to face meeting with that recruiter

• Following up a lead

• Getting a little more organised in your search

• Staying positive and upbeat despite a ‘bad week’

• Learning more about job searching from books, articles and blogs

None of the above actions or activities will on their own secure your next new job. They possibly won’t even result in an interview.

But they’re all baby steps in the right direction – they’re “small wins.”
