3 Ways To Find Consulting Work

Consulting / Contracting, Marketing Yourself, Recession & Downturn 3 Comments

Whilst there may be fewer job vacancies in the market compared to, say two years ago, there are actually more problems for organisations and businesses to contend with.

Organisations are stretched – they’re operating with fewer people whilst trying to maintain market share, grow revenues and deal with increased regulatory controls.

So with the continued pressure on costs and a shaky path to economic recovery, the safe bet is to hire contractors/interim managers and consultants who can help take the pressure off – yet not be a cost burden if there is another dip in the market. Individuals who can provide solutions to specific problems in an efficient and flexible manner. Which in turn creates opportunities for consultants and interim managers.

But how do you find such opportunities?

13 Ways To Stay Positive During An Economic Downturn

Job Searching, Recession & Downturn, The Inner Game 3 Comments

Whilst some individuals find the notion of being positive to be a little ‘fluffy‘ – intellectually, most people understand that your state of mind and how you feel has a direct impact on your actions and the results you achieve in your career – and indeed elsewhere in your life.

But on a practical level, how can you remain positive when you’re surrounded by bad news and little sign of the ‘green shoots’ of recovery reaching the job market…?

Here are 13 tips which may help:

1. Keep your mind focused on solutions instead of problems. In every market there are opportunities – but you’ve got to stop focusing on all the noise about how bad things are in order to see the solutions and potential opportunities.

2. Don’t stress about stuff you can’t control. The economy, lay-offs and a shortage of opportunities are out of your control – so quit worrying about them. Focus 100% of your mental energy and time on those things which you can control or influence. It’s far more productive.

Reason…Season…Lifetime

Recession & Downturn, Redundancy No Comments

Some people come into our lives for a reason

Some people for a season

Some for a lifetime

I came across this wise saying a few years ago when I found myself asking the “why question.”

You know the one we all ask when we lose people that are close to us  - be they friends, family or a close relationship.

I’d lost a close friend and really couldn’t make sense of things. All I kept thinking was: “Why? Why did it happen? Why oh why…?”

Then one day I randomly came across the above quote which helped me look at things a little more philosophically. It didn’t change the situation – but certainly changed my perspective on things and , in time, help me move forward.

Moving forward is the greatest challenge many people face after any loss – including the loss of a job.

Recovery On Track, But Look Out For The Roadblocks

Market Update, Market news, Recession & Downturn, Uncategorized 3 Comments

Guest article from Mitul Kotecha

The last time I wrote for 6 Figure Career Management in April, the title of my article was Light at the End of the Tunnel.

In it I described how I believed that whilst we should brace for the reality of the tough times that lie ahead, eventually there would be some good news amidst all the doom and gloom.

I concluded with the comment, “Although it may be difficult to see it now there is light at the end of the tunnel and positioning yourself ahead of recovery will be crucial to ensure that you can grasp the opportunities that will likely emerge once you find the light. It is not too late to position for these opportunities especially as now more than at any time since the crisis began there are plenty of signs of recovery or green shoots. The main question is whether these shoots are allowed to blossom or left to wither.”

At the end of last year it looked distinctly like the global financial system was on the verge of meltdown, and that the global economy was about to implode. The change in market sentiment since has been dramatic. Click here to read the rest…

5 Ways NOT To Find A Job

Humour, Job Searching, Recession & Downturn, The Inner Game 1 Comment

I think there’s far too much talk and pressure about “how to find a job” and “how to reinvent yourself,” don’t you..?

Instead, how about embracing the recession and taking some time off to relax, have fun and veg out?

Just think, you could watch day-time telly (Oprah, Loose Women or the sports channel), go play some golf, visit the gym and sit in the sauna (but tell everyone you’ve been working out), play online poker, have fun on Facebook, hang out in coffee shops and “do lunch” with friends.

You could stay up late to watch trashy “made for TV” films whilst eating a tub of Haagen Dazs and corn chips. Maybe buy some completely useless items from the late night shopping channels and wake up the next day when…..well, whenever you like.

With such a lifestyle, why would you want to spend time looking for a job?

Oh yes, I forgot – it’s not socially acceptable is it? You’ve got to at least “look” as if you’re trying to find work.

So why not bluff your friends and family into thinking you are working really hard at the job searching but sabotage it?!

Here are 5 great ways NOT to get a job (but which make it look like you’re trying):

1. Live in the past

Role Models: The Secret To Success In a Tough Economy

Career Change, Change & Uncertainty, Inspiration, Job Searching, Recession & Downturn 3 Comments

kenny dalglish

For a brief period as a child, my dream was to be a professional footballer (soccer player) when I grew up. My childhood hero was the Scottish and Liverpool footballer, Kenny Dalglish (pictured here). In my eyes, ‘King Kenny’ was a genius with a football at his feet and I wanted to be just like him.

But then one day when I was 9 or 10, a school friend called John Ryan (wow, I still remember his name) told me “hey Sital, you can’t be a professional footballer, Indian people aren’t allowed to! That’s why there are no Indian footballers in the league – they’re not allowed. You’d better do something else.”

There was no malice or racism in his comment. It was just what he believed, based on the fact that there were no Indian footballers in top-flight football.

He was right. There were no Indian footballers on television so maybe Indian’s weren’t allowed to play professionally. I was devastated. (Well OK, devastated for about a week before deciding I’d become a pilot instead!).

The Early 1990s Recession

Talking of pilots, let’s fast-forward to the recession of the early 90′s when I worked for British Airways for 12 months.

Light At The End Of The Tunnel

Market Update, Recession & Downturn 1 Comment

I’m often asked for my view on the economy - and in particular how long it will be before the economy and the job market turn around once again. Whilst I have a view, I’m not really an economist. But fortunately I know a man who is; Mitul Kotecha.

Having worked as a strategist/economist for over 15-years in several corporate and investment banks in London
, Mitul is now Managing Director and Global Head of FX Strategy for a large European investment bank based in Hong Kong. He is frequently sought out by the press/media for he’s opinions and is a regular guest commentator on Bloomberg and CNBC news channels. And for this week only, he’s our guest commentator.

In the article below, Mitul shares he’s views on the global economy, the financial markets and prospects for the job market. As you’ll see from the title, he feels there may finally be some light at the end of the dark economic tunnel…
