Whether you like it or not – you, me and everyone else is in the “sales” business.
Unless you can sell yourself, sell your team and sell your business – you’re likely to be in trouble in the modern economy and work place.
Yet most people find the very thought of “selling” awkward and uncomfortable.
But it need not be.
When you take an ethical approach to sales you’re not actually “selling” – but in fact “helping” and providing value.
Use the 5 questions below to engage in conversation, understand the needs of the person in front of you – and then offer to help them:

We’re all facing increasing amounts of uncertainty these days.
The ongoing sovereign debt problems in Europe, fluctuating financial markets, the stumbling world economy, the dip in business confidence, lay offs and recruitment freezes have created a cocktail of uncertainty.
But uncertainty isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
Uncertainty can actually become a friend rather than simply an enemy. It all depends on how you view it.

So why now? And why so swiftly?
The reason, of course, is the pressure from the financial markets resulting from a lack of investor confidence. The cost of financing Italy’s debt reached unsustainable levels last week and without drastic changes to reassure investors – the Italians could have been looking at a possible default and the implications that would have in Italy and beyond.
So the pain associated with potentially going bankrupt outweighed the pain of making drastic changes – and so forced Berlusconi to resign and forced the Italian parliament to make big decisions to pacify investors.

What would happen if we placed a racehorse in a field and asked it to simply graze all day? No running, no galloping – just sleeping, grazing and relaxing.
And what if we placed a cow on a racetrack and forced it to race with a jockey on it’s back?
I’ll tell what would happen:

Over the last 3 years I’ve published more than 300 articles. But at the same time, there are a further 300 unfinished articles which have never been been published.
Like many creative people, I get a tonne of ideas – but then my perfectionist tendencies often stop me publishing articles or shipping ideas.

Last week’s launch of the iPad 2 created two types of responses:
a) From the Apple Evangelists: ”It’s amazing”…”Love it!”
b) From the Apple Haters: “It’s a ripoff!”…… “I’d never buy an Apple product”

Last week saw the record £50 million sale of the footballer Fernando Torres from Liverpool to Chelsea – and so making the 26 year old Spaniard the most expensive player in British footballing history.
Being a lifelong Liverpool fan, hearing about the sale made my toes curl at one point. But a week on, I think taking the money from the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich (Chelsea’s owner) was a probably a good decision for Liverpool.
But putting football opinions and loyalties aside, the Torres sale also throws up some interesting lessons on how to manage top talent in today’s workplace:
1. False promises
