I stood in the queue for my usual Starbucks this morning
The barista, a familiar face smiled, his face gleaming

“You watching it tonight?”, he said
A big smile on my face, I replied,
“Of course I am, albeit a recorded version just before bed.”

I thanked him for my warm tea and carried along
Where I saw the bus driver with his colourful woolly cap on
Singing his heart out and smiling as he waited for the traffic lights to turn

There is definitely a positive vibe in the air.
The grey dull start to the week yesterday has changed to a day more fair
And, what’s more, it’s a day in history that is ever so rare.

I logged onto my laptop and just for fun thought I’d check if the news sites were smiling too
Or, if there was still only the depressing stuff about the economy that seems to be a zoo
I was taken back for a moment as this saying stared at me and I was inspired to do

It said, “You campaign in poetry.  You govern in prose.”  (Former Governer of New York, Mario Cuomo)
I smiled in my heart and was drawn to write my poem
To campaign for a smile filled 2009 where we have to carry on with the realities and hardships of our lives with rational minds
But also make time to paint the wall blue, notice the happy bus driver, or pick a daisy from the park on your way home or be proud that you are who you are and for the soul inside you.
